Obituary for Mary E. Benoit

Mary Elizabeth Folsom Benoit passed away on February 14, 2018 in Storrs, CT after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and COPD. Her family, roommate, and nursing home staff were by her side. Mary was born March 27, 1928 in Troy, Maine to Clyde Folsom and Florence Hillman. She was the widow of George Benoit. The couple was married in Pittsfield, Maine and celebrated their fiftieth anniversary with family in 1997. Mary was predeceased by her brothers Leo, Neil, Richard and Alton as well as her sisters Patricia and Eileen, her grand-dogger Hershey, and many friends. She leaves her sister Joan Haskell of Waterville, Maine and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her loving children, Denise Gorka of Williamntic, Sharon Kozin (Gary) of Mansfield Center, Georgina Benoit (Moose Baylock), her grandson, Mark Gorka of Manchester; and her great grandchildren, Bijan of mansfield Center, and Leila Rezai of manchester. Her family meant everything to her, and she to them. Mary was very proud of the diploma she earned at Coventry High School while in her 40’s. She worked many jobs in her lifetime, but enjoyed none more than selling real estate. The couple were the original house-flippers, often renovating homes and reselling them. She and George loved camping, the dog track, casinos, and playing cards and games while surrounded by family and friends. Mary was a caring woman whose home was always open to people who needed one. Mary’s family moved many times over the years starting in Maine and finally settling in Connecticut. Her family had camps in Maine where they spent several summers with extended family. Words cannot express our heartfelt gratitude for all of the staff at Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and the wonderful care they provided. Her roommate “Pattycakes”, Patty Theriault, and her “Mare” were perfect roommates. We also thank Hartford Healthcare Hospice who helped to comfort Mary during her last weeks. The family requests no flowers & instead, donations to the Alzheimer's Association &/or Mansfield Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation recreation fund. Relatives and friends may join the family on Friday, February 23, 2018 between 5pm-7pm at the Coventry-Pietras Funeral Home, 2665 Boston Turnpike, Coventry, CT. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. For online condolences please visit www.pietrasfuneralhome.com.
