Obituary for R.H. "Mac" McDonald

R.H. “Mac” McDonald, 85, of Ellington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 15, 2018 with his family by his side. He was born in Rockville, November 17, 1932 to the late Gladys (Pierce) McDonald. He leaves his beloved wife, Joan, of 58 years, and his always devoted children, John, Karen and David. Mac, a Korean War Veteran, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950 to 1953 where he earned the rank of Sargeant. He attended two years of college at New Britain Teachers College, later graduating from ECSU and obtaining a Masters degree from UConn. He taught sixth grade in the Coventry School system for 33 years. Mac was an avid New York Yankees fan. He played in the Vernon Senior Softball league from 1999 to 2016. He loved his Wednesday morning breakfasts with his baseball buddies, Dick F., Warren N., Don G., Art H., and Dick W. Mac was predeceased by brothers, John and Rick. Mac also leaves a sister-in-law, Beverly L. Boot and very special once a month luncheon friends, Charlie & Kathy and Don and Janet. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 5 to 7 on March 19, 2018 at the Small & Pietras Funeral Home, 65 Elm St., Rockville, CT 06066. A Funeral procession will gather at 10:00 am at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 for burial at Grove Hill Cemetery. The Family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care given to our father –on Bissel 2 – hospice care at Rockville General Hospital.
