Obituary for Patricia A. Cowperthwaite (Sinkiewicz)

Mrs. Patricia Ann (Sinkiewicz) Cowperthwaite, 83, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2018 in Vernon, CT. Pat was a great Woman, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother born on June 19, 1935 in New Britain, CT, the daughter of the late Anthony and Martina Sinkiewicz. She married the late Kenneth J. Cowperthwaite in 1953, raising her family in Vernon and Tolland, CT. She leaves behind a large family that she was very proud of and loved dearly. Pat was world-renowned for telling it like it is. She always told you the truth even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear. She blessed her sons, grandchildren and countless employees as a manager at Hartmann’s Supermarket in Rockville for decades with her advice and an open door policy that will be truly missed by anyone who knew her. These words of wisdom, honesty and sometimes comfort, kept us in line, taught us how to treat people, be humble and gave each of us something to pass down to our future generations. She was a terrible cook, but a fantastic Grandmother and Great-grandmother. Her home is filled with Nana memorabilia and she was always proud to talk about the special traditions and traveling she did with her grandchildren. She was sure to always have delicious ice cream in the freezer, treats hidden where Papa couldn’t find them and teeny weenies in cabbage at family holidays. She survived raising four sons, who each contributed to every grey hair on her head: Kenneth and his wife Patti of Vernon, CT, Daniel and his wife Sherry of Sneads Ferry, NC, and Patrick J. Cowperthwaite of Vernon, CT. She was preceded in death by her youngest son Keith of Henderson, NV earlier this year. She will be remembered fondly by her 17 grandchildren and their partners: Corinne & Gus Peterson of Vernon, CT, Krystal and Josh Hager of Garden City, KS, Devin and Rachael Cowperthwaite of Vernon, CT, Patricia Cowperthwaite and Andrew Gilleo of Vernon, CT, Marisa Cowperthwaite of Sneads Ferry, NC, Leah Cowperthwaite and Ugo Ghisla of Somerville, MA, Emily Cowperthwaite and Zoe Contros-Kearl of New York City, NY, Jordyn and Jonathan Sessoms of Cullowhee, NC, Jacob Cowperthwaite of Cullowhee, NC, Patrick E. Cowperthwaite and Jennifer Carlson of Vernon, CT, Kori and Scott Brown of Haymarket, VA and Victoria Wilson of Stafford, CT. She will always be honored by her 16 great-grandchildren: Tenley, Kaylee, Addison, Caitlin, Stella, Maizy, Abigail, Peyton, Noah, Joshua, Justin, Jason, Jackson, Kaila, Jeffrey, Mason and one great grandchild due in June 2019. She will be sorely missed and survived by her brother Kevin Sinkiewicz and wife Judy of New Britain, CT her sister Barbara Newton of Plainville, CT and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Richard Sinkiewicz of CO, her Brother-in-law William Newton, her sister Marilyn and her husband Frank Morin all of CT. Her family would like to thank Peggy Skidgel and the Skidgel family for all of their support. Peggy not only worked with Pat for many years at Hartmann’s, but treated Pat with kindness and patience as her caregiver during the last years of Pat’s life. In lieu of flowers, please give generously to her beloved church, St. Bernard’s Parish at 25 St Bernard Terrace, Vernon, CT. Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours Sunday, December 16, 2018 from 1 PM to 3 PM at Burke-Fortin Funeral Home at 76 Prospect St in Rockville, CT. Funeral services will be on Monday, December 17 at 11 AM at Burke-Fortin Funeral Home at 76 Prospect Street in Rockville, CT, with burial immediately to follow at St Bernard’s Cemetery.
