MSGT Walter J. Binkowski Jr., 75, of Ellington, beloved husband of 56 years of Rita Maureen (Purzycki) Binkowski, passed away July 2, 2016 at his beach cottage in Charlestown, RI. Walt was born Aug 6, 1940 in Middletown, CT. The son of the late Walter Sr. and Sophie (Piantek) Binkowski. Walt was a Middletown High School graduate of the class of 1958. Walt enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 17 and retired after 20 years of service. During his career, he served in Texas, Mississippi, Massachusetts, North Africa, Spain, West Virginia, Alaska, Colorado, Philippines, Virginia, Italy, England, Germany, and ended his military career at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colorado. Upon his retirement, he moved to Ellington, CT, where he resided for the remainder of his life. While living in Ellington he was employed at US Specialty Retailing in Enfield, CT, where he was Vice President of Computer Services. After his military service, he continued his education and earned associate’s, bachelors, and master’s degrees. Walt was a huge sports fan and enjoyed watching all of his grandchildren in their sporting events. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox and Denver Broncos fan. Besides his wife of 56 years he is survived by his children and their spouses Russell and Susan Binkowski, Robert and Janet Binkowski all of Ellington, and Richard and Cathy Binkowski of Goshen. His loving grandchildren Christopher, Justin, Nicholas, Jessica, Courtney, Austin, and Marley. His brother and sister-in-law Richard and Judy Binkowski, his sister and brother-in-law Louise and Dana Hardy all of North Fort Myers, FL, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law Donna and Bill Hicks of Winder, GA, Denise Coccomo of Lyme, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His granddaughter Jenna Lea Binkowski predeceased him. Relatives and friends may join the family on Thursday July 7, at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St, Rockville from 4 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday July 8, at 9 AM in St Bernard Church, 25 St Bernard Terrace, Rockville. (Please meet directly at the church). Burial with military honors will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery, Ellington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Binkowski Memorial Scholarship in care of Ellington Community Scholarship Association P.O Box 54 Ellington, CT 06029.
