My first day on the job near Huntington in the mountains of Western Massachusetts, Red, apprentice Donnie LaPlante and I were hand digging a pole hole. Approximately a half a mile above us near the top of the mountain, Operator Ray Marier was cutting a switchback road down to us with a Caterpillar (bulldozer). The road was so we could get access to the pole hole with a wood tiger (a tank with a boom attached for setting poles) to set the pole. FYI - Ray had lost a lung to cancer so his air intake and exhale were half that of a normal man. Ray turned over a huge round boulder which started slowly rolling down the mountain towards Red, Donnie and I. Ray yelled down at us to, "Watch the rock!". Donnie and I both started to look up but Red snapped in his loud and gruff way, "Don't look up there, act like you do not hear him". So we continued to look down and went about our work. Ray, thinking we did not hear him and the boulder quickly approaching us, stopped the Cat and yelled as loud as he could, "Watch the Rock!!. Again, Red instructed us, "Act like you don't hear him". Ray in a panic stepped out onto the track of the Cat, cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled as loud as a man can with only one lung, "Watch the rock, watch the rock!!! At the very last minute Red, Donnie and I stepped out of the way of the giant boulder and watched it go by. Ray, suddenly realizing that Red was playing with him, angrily mumbled several obcsene references to red-headed Irishmen as he re-seated himself on the Cat and continued cutting the road. There was never a dull moment when working with Red.
